After returning home from Europe, a wounded and decorated veteran of General George S. Patton’s Third Army, Larry Quilty took an insurance course while recovering in a hospital located in Staten Island. In the fall of 1945, Lawrence A. Quilty started selling insurance out of his home with his wife, Leola’s assistance. After several years in business, Larry Quilty rented office space in a building on Crown Street and hired his first employee in 1949.In 1978 Larry Quilty approached a cousin, John H. Dwyer, to join the agency and John became a part of Lawrence A. Quilty Incorporated in 1979. In 1986, John Dwyer was named executive vice president of Lawrence A. Quilty Incorporated.
In 2001 John Dwyer Jr. began working in the agency, and for the next 15 years, learned from his father how to extend personal service to every customer, no matter how large or small. In 2016 John Dwyer Jr. became President of the agency, and John Dwyer Sr. began enjoying a long awaited retirement.
The history of the Dwyer family as businessowners in Kingston can be traced back to the arrival of Denis Dwyer from Ireland in 1851, settling on the Historic Rondout waterfront. Denis began as a laborer and, soon after, a transporter of goods along the Erie Canal. Future generations of the Dwyer family became boatbuilders along the Rondout Creek, tugboat and barge operators having locations in both lower Manhattan and New Orleans, ice harvesting and brickmaking along the Hudson River. Eventually, a number of Dwyer family members became president of and served on the board of the local, Rondout National Bank.
